Global Cleveland

Global Cleveland is looking for patient and compassionate individuals interested in providing language services to international newcomers in the region.  These services include: (1) English conversation buddy and; (2) basic translation and interpretation.

English Conversation Buddy

This is a unique opportunity to meet one-on-one with an international newcomer and help make a difference in their life. With improved reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, international newcomers can more effectively perform their adult role within their family, career and community.
Activities as an English conversation buddy include:

• Meet one-on-one to work on basic language skills through conversation practice
• Attend social events together and encourage conversation to increase confidence in speaking
• Language exchange – practice English as well as learn how to say things in a their language
• Read a book together to discuss in English
• Assist in academic work or studying for an English exam

Basic Translation and Interpretation

This is a great opportunity for volunteers with proficiency in a foreign language to provide assistance to international newcomers that need basic translation and interpretation for day-to-day situations, such as:

• Reading mail – to communicate its purpose and clarify any action needed
• Filling out an application- responding to questions
• Understanding directions - how to go somewhere on public transportation
• Understanding instructions – how to use/do something
• Assistance with writing – classified ad, short letter, response to an inquiry
• Assistance with communication – over the phone or at an appointment

Time Commitment

• Attend a volunteer orientation at Global Cleveland
• Flexible – we will work around your schedule
• Meeting times are flexible – individuals decide what works best
• As needed basis – you will be contacted when an international newcomer that best matches your interest and shared foreign language is in need of assistance

• Good listening skills, sense of humor
• Previous English tutoring experience

Requirements

• Proficiency in the foreign language providing translation and interpretation services
• Must be at least 21 years old
